The Hateful 8 Ultra - a (8.6 ish) Mile route that you attempt to run as many times as you can in a 8 - hour time limit!
A mixed terrain course ...
The Hateful 8 Ultra starts beneath the steam and hum of the Bridgend Model Engineering Railway, where miniature engines run their endless loop, a quiet nod to what lies ahead. This is an ultra built around repetition, resilience, and the raw challenge of covering as many laps as your body and mind will allow.
The course moves quickly into Parc Slip Nature Reserve, where flat, runnable trails wind through meadows, wetland boardwalks, and young woodland. Early laps feel light, the path soft underfoot, birdlife and wildflowers offering a calm backdrop. But this route isn’t just about the miles, it’s rooted in history.
The Parc Slip Mining Disaster Memorial marks a sobering point on the lap. In 1892, an explosion here killed 112 men and boys. A ring of stones, one for each life lost , quietly holds that memory. You’ll pass it each lap. You don’t have to stop, but it’s there, and it stays with you.
Further along, wooden sculptures emerge from the trees, wildlife, miners, tools, carved into the trail like silent landmarks. They’re familiar by lap three. By lap seven, they start to feel like old trail companions.
You then head through the remains of the Bedford Park Iron Works, now moss-covered walls and foundations from the industrial past. You’re moving through a landscape that once powered furnaces and fed rail lines. It’s not dramatic, but it gives the run weight, a reminder that this land has worked hard before you ever set foot on it.
At the Cefn Junction Signal Box, you reach the halfway point of the loop. It’s a place to refocus, adjust pace, or meet others passing in opposite directions. Then the second half begins, and it changes character.
You climb gradually onto the edges of the Margam open-cast site. Bleak and exposed, this is the toughest mental stretch. Wide, barren tracks roll over reclaimed coal land. There’s little shelter. But it’s honest ground, no distractions, just you, your pace, your reason for being out here.
The final stretch leads past the Parc Slip Visitor Centre before closing the loop back at the model railway. One lap down. Many to go.
Why run the Hateful 8?
It’s built for ultra mindset. No fluff, no gimmicks, just repeatable terrain with varied footing, clear markers, and a story that keeps each lap meaningful.
You’re not just doing laps, you’re covering ground layered with history. Industry, disaster, and recovery have all shaped this place. You’ll feel it.
The course rewards patience. It’s not steep, but it’s not easy. It's relentless in a different way. Flat enough to run, but honest enough to test you.
Whether you complete 1 lap or 4, the challenge is yours to own. The Hateful 8 doesn’t ask for speed, just for everything you’ve got
Be WARNED the elevation can be a bit deceiving after one or two laps.
