Mills n Moors Series
Join us as we celebrate some of the best trails that radiate from the Piece Hall in Halifax out into the surrounding valleys. The event has three routes for you to choose from. A short 'blue' grade route at 29km, a long 'red' grade route at 38km and a 'black' grade route at 65km.
The 'blue' route is a beginner grade trail with broad tracks through woods, over the moor on well defined tracks and along the canal towpath. The 'red' route takes in several climbs and flowing descents that are enjoyable on a mtb or a gravel bike. The 'red' does not have tracks that are downhill mtb style runs where a full face helmet is needed. The 'black' route is suitable for experienced mtbers and experienced gravel riders who appreciate a ride over sections of tracks that are rough and require stamina (i.e very steep climbs iwth a total of 1,150m). The descents are all on old packhorse routes so there is plenty of room to let others zip by or let walkers know that you are on the trail.
You will receive all three gpx route files in the week leading up to the event. Each route is self-guided with no way markings or flags showing the trail. A map of the broad route can be found on the Yorkshire Divide website.

The ride
The rides on the 'Mills n Moors Series' are a personal challenge. They are not races. There is no ‘mass start', the route is NOT way marked and there is no rescue vehicle.
We ride on bridleways, forest tracks, urban greenways and the canal towpath. Some downhill and uphill sections are physically challenging and there are tracks across open moorland but the routes are NOT techy enduro or downhill mtb style routes.
The route
From opposite the Piece Hall West Gate the route is: Shears Inn - North Dean Woods - Black Brook - Norland Moor - Hollas Lane - Ashday Lane - Dark Lane (Magna Via) - Coal Pit Lane - Horton Street and the Piece Hall. Detailed map on the website:
Group social ride
There is an option to join a small group ride which departs at 10.10am from the bike shop. There is no fixed speed we cycle at. We will be stopping and waiting for each other at the top of the many hills and we take turns opening the many gates! Minimum age of 18 years old on the group ride. Any working mtb / e-bike / gravel bike welcome.
It should be note that there the group social ride will take between 3-5 hours and it is not a 'guided' ride. It is not lead by a profession/qualified outdoor instructor and there is no mechanical backup except the fixing of the occasional puncture. NB: there is no personal and /or bike insurance provided on this event.
The organisers do not provide insurance
It is advisable, but not compulsory, to have your own bike and personal injury insurance. Being insured through either British Cycling, Cycling UK or other appropriate body would help cover you for your personal liability and any possible bike loss/damage or injury.
