She Who Walks: Grinton Smelt Mill

Level 2 – 3.5 miles – (600ft of ascent)

We will meet at the hair pin in the road to the south of Grinton Youth Hostel. We will follow a bridle way across Hirst Ridge before ascending 300ft up towards How Hill. We will take our time! We then follow the road for 500m before taking a track along How Hush towards Grinton Smelt Mill. From the Smelt Mill we’ll follow the line of the flue up to Sharrow Hill to take in the views. We’ll then descend and follow the track down Cogden Gill to return to our vehicles.
A short Moorland hike aimed at those with little or no previous experience of walking in upland areas. This route is across moorland for a distance of roughly 3.5 miles. Some parts may be muddy. This is not a long walk but there is some ascent of approx. 600ft. I will have a lowland alternative route planned if the weather conditions are inclement.
There is an option to visit the Bridge at Grinton for a drink after the walk.
Please note this is a FEMALE ONLY event.
Mandatory Kit:
- Walking boots/shoes and thick socks
- Full length trousers as some sections of the path could be overgrown. Jeans are not recommended.
- Waterproof jacket and trousers, even if the forecast is dry.
- Sun hat/glasses
- Spare top layer, warm hat and gloves in your pack
- Snacks and drinks in an easy to find section of your bag. We recommend bringing at least 500ml of drinks with you
- Fully charged mobile phone
- Torch or head torch (for emergency use only)
- Any personal medication needed
- A comfortable back pack to carry your own kit. You may wish to consider putting things inside a plastic bag or other waterproof bag inside your back pack
- Money if you wish to purchase a drink/snack in the pub after
