Craig Leach is a beautiful runnable forest above Inverness with plenty of contour detail. It is a working pine forest with complex contour and rock detail. We offer you a pleasant day orienteering in this popular forest overlooking Inverness with a range of courses to suit all ages and abilities including beginners, however, paths are unsuitable for pushchairs.

Entry on the day will be for colour-coded courses only; pre-entry required for championship courses. Non-Members must enter a colour-coded course.

Terrain: The terrain is predominantly coniferous forest spread across the top of Craig Dunain and Craig Leach. Craig Dunain is steep sided with numerous rock features. There is a good path network ranging from well-made forest tracks to more informal paths and mountain bike tracks. The open areas are devoid of bracken at this time of year so are generally quite quick.

Map: Recently update. Pre-marked and printed on waterproof paper. 5m contour interval. The map shows mountain bike trails in the forest, however the trails are constantly evolving, so do not assume that all those on the ground are necessarily shown on the map. Due to the number of black dots on the map, the map uses the alternative IOF green dash symbol for a vegetation boundary. Dark green is generally windblown, so avoid these areas.

Directions and Parking: Parking and Assembly are next to Ness Farm on the A82 (NH625418, or craft.unscathed.issues on What3Words). From central Inverness take the A82 out of Inverness towards Fort William. Parking is on the left after Ness Farm. Also accessible by public bus from central Inverness.

Start and Finish: The start is approximately 2.5km walk from the car park uphill on tracks. Starts from 11:30 to 14:30 with pre-allocated start times for all championship courses, with punching starts for colour coded. The finish is approximately 1km from the assembly. A marshalled crossing will be provided over the A82 on the way to the start and from the finish to download. Please follow directions from the marshal. There will be a shuttle bus service to the start available for the youngest and more senior competitors.

Download/Toilets: Download and toilets will be available in the Assembly Field. Please follow tapes back to assembly after finishing. It is essential that everyone returns to download even if you have not completed your course. This is so that we know you are back safely and don’t send out a search party.
