Entries:

Pre-entries are strongly encouraged to simplify registration on the day, and to ensure that everyone gets a map. To assist late entries, we will keep on-line entries open until 21.00 the day before the event. There may be limited entry on the day, but only if we have spare maps. Please note that this event is part of a series of five events. You may wish to save disappointment by entering all or some of the events at the same time.

If you are a newcomer to the sport and do not have a an orienteering dibber (to record visiting the controls, also called an SI-Card) then please indicate that you need to borrow an SI-Card.

Courses:

For this event only there will be an additional option to run a "score" course. This means you can choose to visit as many controls as you can within the 60 minute time limit, in any order. Each control is worth 10 points with a penalty of -5 points for every minute or part minute late back. Start times are 6.30 - 7.00, same as the Sprint course.

The events in the SROC Summer Series are intended to appeal to both newcomers and experienced orienteers alike. The technical difficulty is such that experience is an advantage but not a necessity.

At this and the other events in the series there will be one course, split into two parts: the Prologue and the Final. All runners will run the Prologue first, with start times between 6.30 and 7pm. Please choose your start block from those available. This is to help spread out people at the start. They will then, if they wish, run the Final. Both courses will be planned to "sprint" length, meaning a winning time for top athletes of 12-15 minutes per race. More normal mortals might expect to take 20-25 minutes.

Also optional is to join the "reverse order chasing start" for the Final. If you don't fancy the challenge of staying ahead of faster runners, or indeed of catching slower runners, you can start the Final whenever you want. Either way the results will show a total time taken for both parts added together. Chasing starters will be set off in reverse order of their Prologue finishing times, with only a small gap between runners.

You may expect that the planner has included either butterflies (loops taken in different order) or some other way to split the runners and prevent following.

Terrain:

Mature mixed woodland with a few tracks and paths. Mainly runnable but with patches of undergrowth in places.

Starts:

10 minutes start blocks for the Prologue, starts between 18.30 and 19.00.

The Start is close to the parking area. Only go to the start just prior to starting.

Remember to:

  • Clear and check your dibber

Physically punch the start and then pick up your map from the box provided (please ensure you only take one).

Finish/Download:

Please move away from the Finish quickly, and proceed directly to download forming a queue if necessary. After downloading please take your splits – these are pre cut and you do not need to touch the printer. Please move away from download quickly.

Listen out for instructions for the Final start.

Event Officials & Thanks:

Organiser and Planner: Martyn Roome SROC

As a newcomer, if you have any questions prior to the event, either about orienteering or the entry process please contact Martyn Roome on Development@sroc.org

Safety:

The wood is not usually frequented by members of the public so you are only likely to encounter other orienteers. Beware of the usual woodland hazards such as tree roots, stony paths and low hanging branches.

You must report to the finish and download after the event, even if you retire.

Waterproof jackets will be made compulsory if conditions require it.
