NAV4: SMJ - Crossfell Traverse
This is a full day's adventure specifically focusing on understanding the much talked about #SMJ (Sound Mountain Judgement) which in turn is based on the skills needed to operate in high and remote upland area. The day includes a traverse of the high and remote Northern Pennines and Crossfell from Dufton to Garrigill, along the Pennine Way.
Time - 8am meet at Dufton
6pm Finish
Return Transport included.
The route we aim to follow is the second half of our Pennine 39 event as well as being famous as part of Spine Race. Total distance is around 15 miles and 1500m of ascent, with a big climb up onto Old Man Knock, then the high level undulating traverse over Great Dun Fell, Crossfell and down to Greg's Hut. A brief 'brew' in Greg's is always welcome. The long descent to Garrigill completes the day, before free transport back to Dufton.
We’ll focus on the skills, equipment and ‘mind-set’ needed to be efficient in winter / poor weather and visibility. This day is invaluable for any runner wanting to learn winter navigation skills, featuring macro and micro navigation skills, equipment, clothing and safety.
Naturally, this will be an active outdoor session, (and the actual route is weather dependent!) at a steady pace and you’ll learn how to be efficient and safe during the Winter months on the high tops.
