Our two-day Fastpacking Introduction is a perfect initiation into multi-day running and will show you all the equipment you need to run and camp in the mountains. You will learn about planning, equipment and how to navigate. You will also look at camp craft, personal safety and what to do in an emergency. We will also put all the skills covered in day 1 to practice that evening with a camp out at a campsite along route.

This is the most comprehensive Fastpacking course in the UK and will get you fired up to get out and have your own multi-day fastpacking trips.

COURSE CONTENT -

  • Planning - Weather sources, guidebooks and how to plan a multi-day run.
  • Equipment - Tents, camping gear and what to take in your pack.
  • Camp Craft - Finding water, pitching tents and cooking.
  • Clothing - What to wear and the layering system.
  • Navigation - How to navigate using the map and compass.
  • GPS - Using GPS and Apps in the mountains
  • Emergency procedures.
  • Food and nutrition
  • Running poles and how to use them.
  • Evening Camp putting all the skills together

EQUIPTMENT

All participants will receive a full kit list detailing essential items they need to attend this course. We do have some lightweight tents (1.2kg) and 30L running packs that we loan on a first-come-first-served basis. We would recommend purchasing your own summer sleeping bag. If you have any questions about the equipment please do get in contact.

ABILITY LEVEL

This course is about the enjoyment of running in the mountains on a multi-day fast-packing adventure with friends - this is not a performance course. Your running guides will keep the pace relaxed where we walk the uphills, and run some of the flats and downhills. To attend, you will need a good level of fitness as we will be travelling around 10 miles per day with overnight gear. If you can walk in the mountains and run around 10-15km then this course is for you! We also workshop many of the skills like using poles, moving over rocky ground and camp craft - expect plenty of discussion giving time for photos and a breather.

ACCOMODATION

Our route for the two days includes an overnight stay at a valley campsite - we do this to make the course more inclusive and less daunting for those trying out fastpacking for the first time. Camping fees are included in the price of this course.

On occasion where group ability and weather allow, we may use a mountain wild camping location - we will discuss this with you during the course.

If you're unsure of your ability our running/ fast packing course director Kathryn@themountaineeringcompany.co.uk will happily advise you.
