Big Weekend is Edinburgh’s premier orienteering competition!
Held at the end of January, interesting terrain, great courses, and lively social events help attract over 600 participants every year. The 2024 event will be no different…
To really get the party started for WOC 2024, all of this years areas will be urban. Moreover, Edinburgh University Orienteering Club will host a sprint training camp in Edinburgh during the period 22-25th January 2024. The event will be tailored to elite athletes and will feature opportunities to practice head-to-head knockout racing.
Friday will host 2 orienteering events with an exciting Elite Mixed sprint relay around Pollock Halls, an intricate set of Edinburgh University accommodation halls, with small passages, and lots of uncrossable vegetation producing hard to execute nav with tough route choice. This year’s edition of our traditional Fight with the Night Urban will be held around The Inch, a technical suburb which will leave lots of opportunity for route choice.
Saturday will hold EUOC’s first ever World Ranking event around South Queensferry. This intricate area (mapped by a WOC mapper) will play host to an interesting and stimulating elite sprint planned by Frank Townley and Graeme Ackland (WOC planner). Non-WRE courses will be planned to be equally challenging, so that everyone gets a taste of the action!
Sunday is being held on Edinburgh’s hidden sprint orienteering gem, Bughtlin. Elites will be running a sprint, whilst non-elites will be competing in a more typical Urban. Bughtlin is an incredibly technical area with strange building shapes forcing great route choices, and technical execution.
See you there!!!
