As with any good story the Straw Race begins over a pint one Friday night. Two local Yorkshire farmers made a bet about racing from one pub to the next and having a pint at each. As the night continued and more beer was consumed the bet grew. They would now be carrying a bale of straw between the pubs.
The Oxenhope Charity Straw Race has been taking place for 45 years and is a great local tradition in the Pennine Village of Oxenhope. Each year participants, in teams of two, take on the course, running approximately 2.5 miles, visiting 5 pubs for a beer on the route whilst carrying a bale of straw (approx. 15kg).
Some entrants take on the course as a competitive run, attempting to complete it as fast as possible whilst others dress up in wonderful fancy dress and make the most of the beautiful course and enjoy the amazing atmosphere. It truly is a great event and fun for all of the family.
This year the categories will be slightly different. Entry options will be: Full bale and full pint (per team) or half bale and half pint (per team). Teams in any configuration can enter either category.
A team is defined as two people. It is common for multiple teams to run together with a particular fancy dress theme.
To enter and pay for multiple teams online you need to:
Enter your first team and include a 'Team Name';
List the names of people in other teams you wish to run with under 'Running with';
Click 'Add New Entry';
Repeat until all teams entered, using the same 'Team Name';
Proceed to payment.
Minimum Age: 18
Entry costs include: Race number, medal, 5 pints of beer or half pints (per team), donation to charity and all associated race costs.
By signing up you are agreeing to and permitting the use of photos and videos taken at the event for marketing in future years.
Due to the overhead costs of the event we do not offer refunds. However, entries can be edited and therefore transferred to other participants. Please note editing entries will end on 3 July 2024.
There is an option for you to donate your pledge during the online entry process and we would be most grateful for any amount you can give.
