The Lyon Equipment Lake District Mountain Trial is a severe test of fellrunners’ mountaineering ability, stamina and the safe and fast traverse of difficult and often dangerous terrain where navigational skills and route choice are as important as speed. Evolving from a race organised by the YHA in 1952, it is run on orienteering principles and is the longest established event of its kind in Great Britain.

Entrants will be vetted for experience. Please give sufficient information with your entry to allow us to judge your experience, especially if you have not competed in the Mountain Trial before.

Classic Trial: Around 18 miles and 7500ft climb (29 km/2300m). Estimated winning time = 4½ hrs. Minimum age for entry: 18yrs

Medium Trial: Around 13 miles and 5000ft climb (21 km/1500m). Estimated winning time = 3½ hrs. Minimum age for entry: 18yrs

Short Trial: Around 9 miles and 3500ft climb (15 km/1100m). Estimated winning time = 3 hrs. Pairs option again this year. Minimum age for entry: 18yrs, or 14 if running in a pair with a runner aged 21 or over.

Pre-entry fee: £22.00 (£1.50 discount for using own SI card.)
The entry fee for anyone Under 23 on the day of the race is £5.00 (with free loan of an SI card if you don't have one).
