‘Across the Cynllaith’ is back for 2022!

Walkers and runners are invited to enjoy this delightful route across the Afon Cynllaith through fields, woods, lanes and moorland, taking in hills either side of the Shropshire-Mid Wales border. Both route options finish on the Offa’s Dyke National Trail. The scenery is grand, the views are outstanding.
There will be the usual choice of routes:16 or 10 miles. Both routes start and finish in Trefonen and check in at Llansilin. The shorter route is circular, the longer route adds another circle to make a figure of eight with Llansilin at its centre- choose your route on the day, or even on the hoof. The routes follow delightful rights of way and also paths for which we have been granted permission for the day.
The route will be well marked and supervised; written directions given as back-up.

Distance and Timing

10 or 16 miles. Overall ascent  on the long route is approx 987m ( 3238 ft). Most  participants take between 5-8 hrs to complete the long route including stops.

Registration:

Registration at Trefonen Village Hall (SY10 9DG) . Slower walkers must start early, from 8.00am. Fast walkers and runners should start after 9:00am to ensure checkpoints are open.
Registration closes at 10.00am.

Check points:

Llansilin: all participants must check in on arrival. Those doing the 16 mile route over The Gyrn must check in again on their second visit.
Also check in at Craig Sychtyn and the finish- please do not leave without checking in at the finish ( Trefonen Village Hall).

Sustenance:

Bring food and drink. There will also be:

  • water between Trefonen and Llansilin,
  • water/tea/coffee/biscuits at Llansilin,
  • water at Craig Sychtyn
  • water/tea/coffee/cake at the finish.

Relief:

Toilets at Trefonen and Llansilin village halls, also public toilets in Llansilin.

Safety notes:

  • A back marking team will walk the route from 10:00am collecting the waymarking tape and arrows. Don’t let them pass you!.
  • Cut off time: walkers arriving at Llansilin after 12:00 mid-day will not have enough time to complete the 16 mile route and return before check points and registration close and course markings are removed.. Those arriving at Llansilin after mid-day will be directed to take the 10 mile option.
  • It is important that participants provide their entry numbers to the checkpoint marshalls. If for any reason you do not visit the Village Hall finish, you must inform the check-in marshalls at the hall via the emergency number on your walk directions.
  • There are many stiles on both routes. Whilst dogs are welcome, please keep them under close control as there will be livestock in fields.
  • We have had every type of weather on this walk- sometimes all on the same day. Take no notice of the forecast and ensure you have wind and waterproof clothing with you. Some paths are relatively steep and could be slippy after rain, so strong shoes/boots with grips will be best.
